To service portable fire extinguishers the service person must be 18 years of age. An application and test are required to be submitted, to the Utah State Fire Marshal's Office within 45 days of employment.
Each applicant is required to complete the application and test with truth and candor in its entirety. Each Certificate of Registration shall be renewed annually. The renewal dates for certification of registrations will be based upon the license inspection date and valid for one year. This shall take place at the time of the inspection of the facilities by a representative from the Utah State Fire Marshal's Office. Each applicant will be required to retest every 5 years as per state law.
The tests can be answered using the "Administrative rule R710-1" and "NFPA 10, 2007 Edition" as reference materials. There are three individual tests, to be taken, to complete the certification standard. Each test may be taken with reference materials at hand. The Office of the State Fire Marshal and or the test shall not to be considered a source of training for the servicing of Fire Extinguishers.
Management and/or the Fire Extinguisher Supplier are required to provide hands on training for the safe servicing and operation of fire extinguishers for each applicant. Prior to examination Management and/or the Fire Extinguisher Supplier shall also review all safety procedures and demonstrate by inspection and procedure all steps and equipment used in the servicing of fire extinguishers. Hands-on training will help to ensure proper filling procedures and safe handling practices of product and facility equipment.
Fees - Each Licensed Fire Protection Concern will be charged:
- Initial Application: $30.00 testing fee & $40.00 certification fee per application.
- Yearly Renewal of Certification: $40.00 per applicant.
- Five year Recertification: $30.00 testing fee & $40.00 recertification fee per application.
The application should be filled out with candor and accuracy, for information found on the application will be used to complete a law enforcement background check for each applicant who desires to service fire extinguishers.
Approved applicants will receive a Utah State Fire Marshal Certification Registration Card, renewable annually and mailed to the Servicing License Location.
